If it is the cable box, make sure you haven't MAC secured it or similar. Where is your DHCP server in all of this? If it is the wireless router, it may not be doing DHCP over the ethernet as well - hence the Mac not getting an address.

The POE powers the ubiquity router in the stairway which of course has no electrical outlets anywhere. Better for getting an even signal throughout the house for mobile phones. I purchased the Netgear switch to be able to have the two Macs at the location of the switch and the cable box (modem) and move the wifi unit into the stairway which is in the middle of the house. I used to have it plugged directly into the router and it worked fine. The router is at the other side of the house from the G5. Setting the IP address manually are you using the same subnet as the router? If you plug the G5 directly into the router does it work?
